Job Description:

A fantastic opportunity has become available in Somerset. The position is of a Housing Advice Officer, it is a full Time role till the end of May with the potential for an extension. As a Housing Advice Officer you will need to offer advice and information to service users who may have a housing need, be homeless or at risk of homelessness, those representing them and members of the public generally, about homelessness and it's prevention. At the same time you will need to record, investigate and fully document decisions, in accordance with the organisations statutory duties, policies, practices and concepts of customer care using professional best practice. You will need to Home Visit every case where necessary, in particular parental exclusions to negotiate with family to try and prevent vulnerable applicants becoming homeless. Also visit every household to whom a full homeless duty is likely to be accepted. This can often be in remote areas within the region and surrounding areas. Housing Advice Officers carry out approximately 3 visits per week, depending on the location of the visit, each visit can take up to 2 hours. Part of you role will be to investigate a wide range of homelessness issues which include mortgage repossessions, domestic violence, parental exclusions, prison and hospital discharge, end of assured short-hold tenancies, possession orders for registered social landlords and vulnerable young people. You will be expected to attend case conferences with other professions where housing advice is sought and a diplomatic response is required. Your role will require you to provide in depth advice to landlords on tenancy and welfare benefits legislation to try and prevent homelessness. As part of the role requirements, you will need to attend meetings as a housing specialist taking the lead on a number of core groups i.e. Young People and Care Leavers, mental Health and disability living, Domestic Abuse, Probation and Prolific Offenders, teenage pregnancy. In your role, you will be expected to liaise with other agencies, i.e. Probation, Social Services (adults care and childcare), Police, Women Refuges, Tenancy Support, CAB, Wood spring Deposit Guarantee Board, other Housing Associations, Housing Corporation, Councillors, Home Office, Solicitors, Education, GP's hospital and Prisons. A full UK Drivers License and an access to a car is essential due to the travelling requirements.
